Are you feeling overwhelmed by the NBTs? Are you unsure about what they are and why they matter? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

The National Benchmark Tests (BTs) are two critical exams that universities use to assess your academic readiness. The exams, which include the Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) and Mathematics (MAT) tests, are three hours long and consist of multiple-choice questions.

The AQL NBT test assesses two essential skills: Academic Literacy (AL) and Quantitative Literacy (QL). AL evaluates your ability to engage with the demands of university academics, while QL tests your ability to manage situations and solve problems in the context of higher education. The Mathematics NBT test (MAT) assesses your mathematical concepts in the context of higher education.

Why are these tests so crucial?

Well, the NBTs play a critical role in determining whether your university application will be successful or not. The exams also help universities identify learners who may need additional support. You can apply to write the NBT test on the National Benchmark Projects website, but make sure you choose a date that gives you enough time to prepare!

How much do the NBTs cost?

The AQL NBT costs R145 while writing both the AQL and MAT NBTs will set you back R290. If you need a re-mark, it will cost you R250.

How can I prepare for my NBT test?

Many learners underestimate the importance of preparing for these exams since they are multiple-choice. However, preparing for the NBTs is critical for several reasons.

  1. You are not allowed to use a calculator for both tests, so you need to be comfortable with mental math.
  2. The work you are being tested on may not necessarily be at the level you covered in high school.
  3. This is your one chance to make a good impression with your university application.

At Advantage Learn, we offer NBT Preparation workshops to help you ace your NBTs. We have in-person, online courses, and live online sessions available.
