Student tips
As a parent, watching your child grow up is an exciting journey full of milestones, and one of the most significant events in their life is their matric dance. It is an opportunity for them to show off their personality and style, and enjoy a fun-filled night with their classmates. But as the big night approaches, there can be some apprehension and confusion about what to expect. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to help parents navigate the lead-up to their child’s matric dance.
The first thing on every matric student’s mind is the perfect dress or suit. As a parent, you can support your child in finding an outfit that they love and feel comfortable in. Encourage them to keep up with current trends but always remind them that it’s important to choose something they will be happy to look back on in years to come.
In the weeks leading up to the matric dance, there will be many preparations to be made. Your child will need to decide whether they want to go with a date or as a group. They will also need to coordinate their look with their date or friends. Help them to get ready by organizing a pre-dance pampering session, like a massage, to help them feel relaxed and confident.
Accessories, hair, and makeup play a significant role in completing the overall look (and cost!). Encourage your child to test out their hair and makeup beforehand, to avoid any surprises on the day. Ensure that they have all the essentials in their clutch, like lipstick, powder, and gum.
Your child’s safety is paramount, and it’s important to ensure that they have safe transportation for the night. Discuss the transportation options available and decide on the most suitable one. If your child is planning to go with friends, you can arrange for an Uber to pick them up and drop them off at the venue and after-party.
A matric dance is a memorable night, and your child will want to cherish the memories for years to come. Encourage them to capture the night with photos and to try out different photo booth poses. If possible, arrange to take some family photos before the night begins.
After the matric dance, there is usually an after-party where your child will want to let their hair down and enjoy the night with their friends. Ensure that they have a safe and fun place to go, and that they have made arrangements for transportation. Discuss the importance of drinking responsibly and setting limits.
Your child’s matric dance is an exciting time for both you and your child. By following these tips, you can help them to feel confident and ready for the big night, while also ensuring that they stay safe and make the most of the experience. Most importantly, remind them to have fun and enjoy the moment!
