At Advantage Learn, innovation is a driving force behind transformative initiatives. We recently hosted a captivating webinar featuring Saul Fox, a former student turned pioneer in the realm of 3D prosthetics printing. Saul’s journey from student to innovator exemplifies our commitment to empowering change in schools in South Africa through education and technology.

Saul is a recent graduate of Yeshiva College, one of the top schools in South Africa, and a participant in Advantage Learn’s Further Studies Programme. During his time with Advantage Learn, Saul explored advanced physics studies, honing his skills and nurturing a passion for problem-solving. It all began with a 3D printer and a simple idea. Saul came across a design for finger extensions, originally intended as a novelty item. Intrigued by the chance to make a real impact, Saul wondered if these extensions could be adapted into functional prosthetics for those in need, leveraging the potential of 3D printed prosthetics in South Africa.

Motivated by the desire to make a difference, Saul reached out to e-NABLE, a global community that develops open-source designs for prosthetics. Surprisingly, he discovered that there was no e-NABLE presence south of Ethiopia, leaving a significant gap in access to affordable prosthetic solutions in South Africa.

Overcoming Challenges in 3D Prosthetics Printing

Undeterred, Saul dove headfirst into the project. Armed with determination and supported by his community, he navigated obstacles typical of any ambitious endeavour. From navigating school commitments to overcoming self-doubt, Saul’s journey to create accessible 3D printed prosthetics in South Africa is a testament to persistence and resourcefulness.

With access to a 3D printer and the guidance of mentors like his father and experts from Vitz, Saul began producing prosthetic devices. The first prototype, named the Phoenix V3 hand, was designed to provide functional support to children without fingers, offering them newfound independence and capability. Demonstrating the potential of 3D prosthetics printing to customise prosthetics at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods, Saul’s initiative gained momentum. Through corporate sponsorship and the acquisition of advanced printing technology, Saul expanded his operation, reaching more individuals in need across South Africa.

Today, Saul continues to innovate with the Kinetic Hand, a cutting-edge prosthetic that leverages flexible materials for enhanced functionality and comfort. His work is revolutionising 3D printed prosthetics in South Africa. This latest advancement underscores the brilliance of students like Saul, as well as Advantage Learn’s commitment to innovation and accessibility. Saul’s story embodies our core values of innovation, compassion, and community. We believe in leveraging education and technology to empower individuals to create meaningful change in their communities and beyond.
